Nagpur:In a significant development in the high-profile Mahal riot case, the Nagpur District and Sessions Court has granted conditional bail to accused Mohammad Gazi Iftekhar. The order was passed by Additional Sessions Judge S.G. Borlepawar after hearing arguments from both sides.
The accused was booked for allegedly carrying out a deadly attack on then Deputy Commissioner of Police Niketan Kadam during the riots that took place in the Mahal area. Ganeshpeth Police had registered serious charges against him, including rioting, damaging public property, illegal possession of weapons, and assault on police personnel.
During the investigation, police informed the court that the accused had allegedly attacked former DCP Niketan Kadam with an axe during the violence, causing injuries. The prosecution argued that the offence was grave in nature and opposed the bail plea.
After considering the submissions made by both parties, the court granted bail to the accused on a personal bond of Rs 1.5 lakh. However, the court imposed strict conditions while granting relief.
As per the order, Mohammad Gazi Iftekhar will have to mark his attendance at Ganeshpeth Police Station every Monday and Thursday. The court also directed the accused not to influence witnesses or interfere with the ongoing investigation in any manner.
