Nagpur: A hit-and-run case registered in the Sonegaon area has taken a serious turn, with police investigation allegedly revealing that the incident was not an accident but a planned attempt to kill Sheikh Akram alias Bhuru Sheikh Rahman over an old dispute.

The Crime Branch Unit-2 arrested MCOCA accused Sheikh Mohsin alias Baba Tiger Sheikh Musa, who had been absconding in connection with the case. The accused was reportedly apprehended from Shegaon railway station after police laid a trap based on information about his movements.

The incident took place on the night of August 11, 2026, in front of Hotel Memories near Somalwada Square. A four-wheeler allegedly hit Sheikh Akram before the driver fled the spot. Sonegaon police had initially registered a hit-and-run case.

Meanwhile, Crime Branch Unit-2 began a parallel investigation. Police examined CCTV footage, technical evidence and intelligence inputs, which allegedly revealed an old dispute between Akram and the accused. Investigators subsequently suspected that the vehicle collision had been deliberately planned.

Five accused — Shahbaz Khan alias Salman Billa, Amir Bashir Sheikh, Mohammad Sahil Ansari, Mohammad Taufiq Sheikh and Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Salim — had already been arrested in the case. However, Sheikh Mohsin alias Baba Tiger remained absconding. Police have also invoked the MCOCA against the accused in view of the alleged organised criminal background.

Police received information that Mohsin was in Akola and had plans to travel by train. A Unit-2 team reportedly disguised themselves and laid a trap at Shegaon railway station. When the accused arrived at the station, police detained him.

Police recovered two mobile phones and property worth around ₹1 lakh from the accused. He was subsequently handed over to Sonegaon police for further legal action and investigation.
