Nagpur Heatwave Crisis: Are Private Institutes Ignoring Collector Orders?

Nagpur: As Nagpur continues to reel under an intense heatwave with temperatures crossing 46°C, serious questions are now being raised over whether heat safety directives issued by the administration are actually being enforced on the ground.

The concern has intensified after reports emerged that nearly three dozen unidentified people died in Nagpur within days during the ongoing extreme heat conditions, with suspected heatstroke being seen as a possible factor in several cases. Many of the deceased were reportedly homeless individuals found on roadsides and public places during peak afternoon temperatures.

Amid these alarming developments, students and parents across the city are now questioning why several private educational institutions and coaching centres are still conducting compulsory offline sessions during the hottest hours of the day.

According to students, one engineering college in Wanadongri is reportedly scheduled to conduct a 21-day Campus Recruitment Training program from May 25 to June 18, with sessions running from 10 AM to 5 PM and mandatory attendance requirements. Students allege that classrooms lack adequate cooling infrastructure, with limited coolers and insufficient air-conditioning despite the severe weather conditions.

Students fear prolonged exposure to extreme heat could lead to dehydration, exhaustion, headaches, and difficulty concentrating. Many claim they feel helpless due to strict attendance rules.

Parents have also raised concerns about coaching classes calling students for evening batches around 4:30 PM, forcing children to travel during dangerously high temperatures. They argue that many institutions already have online teaching facilities available but are still insisting on physical attendance.

The situation has triggered public anger and renewed scrutiny over the effectiveness of the district administration’s heatwave advisories.

Citizens are now asking:

  • Did the Collector’s office form any special monitoring teams to check violations of heat-related orders?
  • Are private institutes and coaching centres being inspected?
  • Has any action been taken against institutions ignoring safety advisories?
  • Or were the orders issued merely for media attention without actual enforcement?

With Nagpur witnessing one of its harshest summers in recent years, demands are growing for immediate intervention, stricter enforcement, and temporary online learning measures to protect students and children from potentially life-threatening heat exposure.
