Nagpur: Bringing recognition to Nagpur’s scientific fraternity, Dinesh Vitthalrao Ganvir has assumed charge as the 55th Director General of the Geological Survey of India (GSI), taking the helm of the country’s premier geoscientific organisation after a career spanning more than three decades.
Ganvir’s elevation to the top post marks a significant milestone in a professional journey built on extensive experience in geological investigations, mineral exploration, engineering geology and institutional administration.
A postgraduate in Geology from Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU), Ganvir joined the Geological Survey of India in 1994 after completing his Master’s degree. Over the next 32 years, he served in several scientific, technical and administrative capacities across GSI’s Central, North-Eastern and Northern regions.
Before his appointment as Director General, he was serving as Additional Director General and Head of Department of GSI’s Central Region at Nagpur. He was also holding the additional responsibility of National Mission Head-II.
His professional contributions encompass geological mapping, mineral exploration, engineering geology and multidisciplinary geoscientific investigations, reflecting his extensive involvement in the organisation’s scientific and operational activities.
His appointment places a Nagpur-based geoscientist at the head of one of India’s key scientific institutions, responsible for geological surveys, mineral resource assessment and geoscientific research across the country.
