Nagpur Fake Currency Case: Two Convicted, Sentenced to 7 Years in Prison

Nagpur: In a strong verdict aimed at curbing counterfeit currency operations, the District and Sessions Court in Nagpur has convicted two accused and sentenced them to seven years of rigorous imprisonment.

The judgment was delivered by District and Sessions Judge Nitin Jadhav (Court No. 16), who found the accused-Jamrul alias Manirul Hussain and Azeem Sheikh-guilty under Section 180 (3/5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. In addition to the prison term, both have been fined ₹50,000 each. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional six months of imprisonment.

The case dates back to August 6, 2025, when a special police team from Tehsil Police Station received information about two suspects carrying fake currency near the Mayo Hospital area. Acting swiftly, the police apprehended both individuals.

During the search, authorities recovered a total of 243 counterfeit ₹500 notes from their possession. While the notes appeared similar to genuine currency, several of them carried identical serial numbers, raising immediate suspicion.

The seized notes were later sent for verification to the Currency Note Press in Nashik, where it was confirmed that all the notes were counterfeit. Following the investigation, Police Inspector Rasool Sheikh filed the chargesheet in court.

During the trial, the prosecution examined nine witnesses. Key evidence included the seizure panchnama and the forensic report from the Nashik printing facility. Assistant Public Prosecutor Adv. Abhay Jikar presented strong arguments, helping establish the case against the accused.

After evaluating all evidence and testimonies, the court held both individuals guilty and awarded a strict sentence. The ruling is expected to serve as a deterrent against counterfeit currency rackets in the region.
