Nagpur: A late-night firing at the residence of Congress corporator Shubham Motghare in Bhandewadi police station limits has raised fresh concerns over law and order in East Nagpur, prompting senior police officers to step up the investigation.

A day after the incident, Nagpur Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre Patil personally visited Motghare’s residence on Wednesday, inspected the scene and met the corporator and his family. He also reviewed the investigation with senior officers and the teams working on the case.

During the visit, the Police Commissioner assured Motghare and his family that the incident was being treated as a serious matter and that every effort was being made to identify and arrest the assailants at the earliest.

Multiple police teams have been formed to trace the attackers, while the Crime Branch has also been brought into the investigation.

Attackers remain elusive

The firing took place late on Tuesday night when unidentified persons allegedly opened fire at Motghare’s house. No one was reported injured in the incident, but the firing caused panic in the locality.

Police rushed to the spot after receiving information and began examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area. Investigators are also collecting information about suspicious persons and movements before and after the attack.

More than 24 hours after the incident, however, the main attackers remain at large.

Police have reportedly detained some suspects for questioning and are examining their possible links with the firing. Investigators are hopeful that interrogation, CCTV footage and technical evidence will help establish the identity and whereabouts of the assailants.

Crime Branch intensifies probe

Given the seriousness of the attack on an elected representative, Crime Branch personnel have joined the investigation. Separate teams are working on identifying the attackers and tracing their possible hideouts.

Investigators are examining CCTV recordings from the vicinity and attempting to reconstruct the movements of the suspects before and after the shooting. Police are also probing whether the attack was planned and whether the assailants had conducted surveillance of the corporator’s residence.

Political leaders visit Motghare’s residence

The firing triggered a political reaction soon after the incident. Congress MLA Vikas Thakare, along with several party leaders and workers, reached Motghare’s residence late on Tuesday night.

Corporator Atul Kotecha and other public representatives also visited the spot and took stock of the situation.

The presence of a large number of political leaders and supporters kept the area tense late into the night.

Extortion angle under scanner

Police are yet to establish the motive behind the firing and are examining multiple possibilities.

One of the key angles being investigated is a possible connection with an earlier extortion case. Motghare had reportedly handed over a person accused of demanding extortion money to the police some time ago.

Investigators are checking whether the firing could be linked to that incident. At the same time, police are also gathering information about possible family disputes, property-related issues and other personal or business-related conflicts involving the corporator.

A possible political rivalry is also being discussed in connection with the attack, although police have neither confirmed nor ruled out any angle at this stage.

With the Police Commissioner personally reviewing the investigation, pressure is now mounting on the police to crack the case quickly, identify the assailants and establish the motive behind the brazen firing at the residence of an elected representative.
