Nagpur: A 16-year-old girl was rescued by alert local divers after she allegedly jumped into Ambazari Lake in an apparent suicide attempt on Wednesday morning, triggering panic in the area.

The Class XI student, a resident of Gawlipura in the Dharampeth area, had reportedly gone missing from her home early in the morning.

According to police, the girl’s father noticed at around 4 am that she was not at home. The family searched for her but could not locate her and subsequently informed Sitabuldi police.

Police launched a search for the teenager. Meanwhile, at around 9 am, she reached Ambazari Lake and allegedly jumped into the water.

Local divers present near the lake noticed the incident and immediately sprang into action. They entered the water and managed to locate the girl and bring her safely to shore.

On being alerted, Ambazari police rushed to the spot. The girl was subsequently handed over to Sitabuldi police for further inquiry.

During questioning, police reportedly learnt that the teenager had attempted to take her own life on an earlier occasion as well.

Police counselled the girl and, after ensuring her safety, handed her over to her family.

The incident has once again highlighted the importance of timely intervention and support for young people facing emotional distress. Police advised family members to remain attentive to warning signs and seek professional help when necessary.
