Nagpur: A 24-year-old man has been arrested in Nagpur after he allegedly engaged in obscene conversations with an 11-year-old girl on Instagram, recorded video calls with her and uploaded the recordings on the social media platform. Police are also probing allegations that the accused pressured the minor to marry him and attempted to influence her on religious matters.

The case came to light in the Jaripatka police station area after the girl’s mother checked her Instagram account and allegedly found objectionable chats and video-call recordings.

According to police, the Class VI student had come in contact with the accused after receiving an Instagram ID through one of her friends. The accused, identified as Ankit Sampat Devgade, a 24-year-old resident of Chandrapur, allegedly began communicating with the minor through the platform.

During the conversations, the accused allegedly used obscene language and made inappropriate remarks. Police are also investigating allegations that discussions about religion were used to pressure the girl to marry him.

The girl’s mother reportedly discovered the alleged communications after checking her daughter’s Instagram account. She allegedly found records of video calls and learnt that recordings of the calls had been uploaded on Instagram.

The complaint also alleges that messages containing obscene language and objectionable reels were sent to the minor from another Instagram account.

Police are further investigating allegations that a fake Instagram account was created in the girl’s name and that religious posts were uploaded through the account.

Following the mother’s complaint, Jaripatka police registered a case under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Information Technology Act and arrested Devgade.

Police are examining the accused’s social media accounts, chats, video-call records and other digital evidence to establish the full extent of the alleged offences. Investigators are also checking whether anyone else was involved in operating the suspected accounts or circulating the material.

The investigation is underway.
