Nagpur: In a major move to strengthen law and order, Commissioner of Police Vishwas Nangre Patil has issued stringent directions to intensify night policing across Nagpur, making it compulsory for at least 30 percent of the staff attached to every police station to participate in nightly nakabandis and patrolling.
The directive comes amid growing concerns over serious crimes in the city, including four murders reported over the past week. Senior officers have been asked to ensure strict surveillance of habitual offenders, with accountability likely to be fixed if repeat criminals are found involved in major offences.
According to police sources, the Top Cop has been conducting surprise late-night inspections at police stations and has personally joined combing operations on several occasions to assess ground-level policing. His emphasis is on proactive policing and maintaining constant pressure on known criminals.
As part of the revised strategy, every police station has been instructed to organise nakabandis within its jurisdiction every night. Police teams have also been ordered to conduct extensive combing operations across the city at least twice every week to identify and monitor suspicious and history-sheeter elements.
The Commissioner has further directed strict enforcement of the existing rule requiring all kiosks and commercial establishments to close by 10 pm.
To ensure effective implementation, Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) will directly supervise night operations in their respective zones. Each DCP has been asked to prepare a detailed operational plan and present it before the Police Commissioner prior to deployment. After the night’s operations conclude, a comprehensive action-taken report must be submitted to the Commissioner by 5 am for review.
Police have also been instructed to inspect private security arrangements at commercial establishments and residential complexes to ensure security guards remain alert while on duty and do not neglect their responsibilities during the night.
In another significant initiative, police stations have been encouraged to involve responsible citizens willing to assist the police in maintaining public safety and strengthening community policing.
Senior officials believe that sustained night patrolling, regular vehicle checks, surprise combing operations, and closer monitoring by senior officers will not only deter criminal activities but also enhance public confidence in the city’s policing system.
