The incident occurred around 9 am on Sunday, when Rajat Gupta, who runs a pani puri stall, was crossing the road to purchase supplies. According to police, the accused approached him on the pretext of asking for directions and engaged him in conversation.

The suspects allegedly took advantage of the situation and snatched a gold locket from Gupta’s neck before fleeing on a motorcycle.

After Gupta lodged a complaint with Ganeshpeth police, the Crime Branch’s anti-chain-snatching team launched a parallel probe. Investigators examined CCTV footage from the crime scene and surrounding areas and also activated their network of informants to identify the suspects.

Acting on crucial leads obtained during the investigation, the team reportedly traced and arrested all three suspects within 12 hours. They have been identified as Junaid Akhtar Khan, Mohammed Sajid Sheikh alias Monu, and Faizan Sheikh Yasin Sheikh.

Police said the accused admitted their involvement in the chain-snatching during questioning. The stolen gold locket, the motorcycle allegedly used in the crime and two mobile phones were recovered from them. The total value of the seized property is estimated at around Rs 1.5 lakh.

According to police records, two of the arrested suspects have criminal antecedents and have previously been booked in cases involving theft, chain-snatching and other offences.

The investigation has also reportedly revealed that the accused were addicted to narcotic substances. Police further found that the suspects were working at a flower shop in the Tajbagh area.

After undergoing medical examination, all three accused were handed over to Ganeshpeth police for further legal proceedings.

Police are now investigating whether the accused were involved in other similar chain-snatching incidents in Nagpur and are examining their criminal backgrounds and possible links to other cases.
