Nagpur: The counting of votes for the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) elections will begin at 10 am on January 16, in accordance with the schedule laid down by the State Election Commission. Counting centres have been established across all ten administrative zones of the city, with arrangements in place for the simultaneous counting of votes in all wards. Polling will be held on January 15.

Officials said each Returning Officer will be equipped with 20 tables for counting votes polled through Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), along with four separate tables for postal ballots. While the counting process will commence at the same time across all zones, preliminary trends are expected to emerge between 12.30 pm and 1 pm. However, authorities cautioned that the declaration of final results may take longer than usual.

The NMC administration has completed all logistical and administrative preparations for counting, alongside arrangements for polling. Booth-wise distribution of EVMs is scheduled to take place on January 14. To ensure accuracy and efficiency, every counting table will be manned by a supervisor and an assistant. Dedicated media centres will function at each counting venue to facilitate coverage.

This civic election is being held after a gap of nearly nine years, and officials noted a significant rise in polling infrastructure. The number of polling booths has increased from 2,700 in the previous election to 3,004 this time. Out of these, 321 polling stations have been classified as sensitive, with live webcasting to be carried out at 255 locations. All such stations will be closely monitored from the central control room at the NMC headquarters.

A senior official from the NMC Election Department said all arrangements have been put in place to ensure a smooth and uninterrupted counting process. For polling day management, 3,579 staff have been appointed as Presiding Officers and 10,737 as Polling Officers. Each polling station will have a police constable or Home Guard deployed to handle any untoward situation.

Given the increase in the number of polling stations, several voters have been reassigned to new booths. To assist them, the civic body has arranged GPS-based location facilities to help voters easily locate their designated polling centres.
