Murder convict, undergoing lifer, escapes from GMCH; cops mount massive hunt

Nagpur: The Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Wednesday turned a hot spot of sensation when a seasoned prisoner, undergoing life imprisonment, escaped from a ward where he was being treated for some ailment. The escaped prisoner has been identified as Mahmood Khan Azam Khan Pathan (40). A massive hunt has been mounted to recapture the fugitive.

According to sources, on Tuesday (Oct 6), the murder convict Mahmood Khan Azam Khan Pathan, sentenced to life imprisonment and lodged in Nagpur Central Jail, reported health problems of serious nature. Subsequently, he was taken to GMCH and admitted in a ward. While, being treated, the prisoner gave a slip to policemen keeping a watch on him and vanished.

Sources further said that initially the prisoner was being treated at Central Jail Hospital after health problem cropped on Tuesday. However, the doctors at the Jail Hospital, after watching health condition, advised shifting of Mahmood Khan Azam Khan Pathan to GMCH.

After being taken to GMCH, he was admitted in Prisoner Ward. Surprisingly, the health of the prisoner Mahmood Khan Azam Khan Pathan suddenly improved so much so that he managed to hoodwink policemen deployed there on guard duty and escape at six in the morning. The moment escape of the prisoner was noticed panic gripped the guard policemen.

The appalled cops immediately alerted higher authorities who in turn ordered naka bandi at all exit points of the city. However, at the moment, Mahmood Khan Azam Khan Pathan is free bird but hiding at a ‘safe place.’ It is reported that behavior of the murder convict was far from satisfactory and hence was being denied parole time and again.

Ajni police have registered a case in connection with the escape of Mahmood Khan Azam Khan Pathan. A hunt on massive scale has been mounted to nab the fugitive as early as possible.
