Widow of former NEERI Director found murdered in Tatya Tope Nagar

In a brutal and heartrending incident, 69-year-old woman identified as Vasundhara Bal the widow of former NEERI Director Scientist Late Dr Anand S Bal a resident of I-26, Tatya Tope Nagar was found murdered early in the morning of October 7, 2015 at her residence between 8:45 am and 9:30 am.

The posh and peaceful Tatya Tope Nagar locality was jolted to the core when the maid servant identified as Sheela Ingle discovered her mistress lying dead on the floor of their house and the 9-month-old granddaughter sitting crying near the dead-body.

The maid servant while speaking to media personnel said that she usually comes between 10:15 am and 10:30 am. Today she arrived at 10:15 am. She observed that the wooden door and the steel grill were bolted from outside.

She went to the rear and saw the rear door too locked from inside. So she came to the front door and gained entry after opening the grill door and the wooden door. She found the mistress Vasundhara Bal lying motionless on the floor while the granddaughter of Vasundhara Bal was sitting beside the body of her grandmother crying. The servant lady immediately ran outside and contacted a neighbor called Apte living hit opposite to their house. He came and after inspecting the body, informed the police and the son and the daughter-in-law.

According to In-Charge Police Inspector of Rana Pratap Police Station Ravindra Gidde, the son of the deceased Vasundhara Bal identified as Aditya Bal leaves for his office at around 8 am, while the daughter-in-law of the deceased Vasundhara Bal leaves for her office at 8:45 am. This horrendous crime was committed somewhere between 8:45 am and 10 am.

The police personnel from Rana Pratap Nagar Police Station arrived immediately on receipt of information at 11.30 am. The In-Charge Police Inspector Ravindra Gidde along with a team of policemen reached the spot and started probe into the murder.
According to Additional Commissioner of Police Shrikant Tarwade who visited the crime spot along with Deputy Commissioner of Police Deepali Masirkar and Deputy Commissioner of Police Shailesh Balkawde, said that till the post-mortem report arrives, the cause of murder cannot be stated clearly.

Another startling fact that has come to fore is that the reasons behind the murder could not be ascertained as yet. Robbery or loot does not seem to be cause of the murder. In fact the gold bangles on her hands and the gold chain around her neck were intact. Almost all the goods, jewellery and other valuables are intact and said to be exactly as they were when the son and daughter-in-law left the house.

The services of dog-squad were also pressed into service. The sniffer dog had smelled the crime spot and went outside running to the end of the street and turning left.

After the initial probe and paper formalities, body of the deceased Vasundhara was sent to Government Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.

Till the filing of this report, the police officials including Additional Commissioner of Police Shrikant Tarwade, Deputy Commissioner of Police Deepali Masirkar and Deputy Commissioner of Police Shailesh Balkawde have constituted 6 special squads with DB Squad personnel from Sonegaon Police Station, Rana Patap Police Station, Sitabuldi Police Station and Ambazhari Police Station to undertake full-scale investigations and crack the murder case at the earliest. Pratap Nagar police have registered a case of murder.

Corporator of the area Girish Deshmukh who visited the crime spot said to media personnel that this kind of incident where a senior citizen is murdered in her own home is a heart-rending act. The police should investigate and arrest the culprits at the earliest and ensure that the goons are awarded an exemplary punishment. While reporting to the media-personnel, he said this does not seem to be a case of murder for looting.
