Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (Nagpur Municipal Corporation) has ordered the demolition of unauthorized construction housing Umesh Varma’s Dhrampeth Moonlight Studio in the Dharampeth area, directing the owner to remove the illegal structure within 15 days at their own expense. The civic body has warned that failure to comply will result in NMC carrying out the demolition and recovering the entire cost from the concerned party.

The action relates to a residential building at Plot No. 11, Municipal House No. 120/G, Vidarbha Premier Housing Society, Bhagwadhar Layout, Dharampeth. Following a complaint, NMC officials conducted a site inspection on June 27, 2025, and found that unauthorized construction had been carried out in the mandatory side margins on both the eastern and western sides of the building. The illegally constructed area was being used commercially, including operations of Moonlight Studio along with an office.

To verify legality, the building owner was asked to submit relevant approval documents. No documents were produced. Consequently, NMC issued a notice under Section 53(1) of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966.

Despite the lapse of the notice period and multiple hearings, the unauthorized construction was not removed. The administration recorded that while the applicant appeared on some occasions, the non-applicant remained absent during several hearings. After hearing all sides, the Assistant Commissioner of Dharampeth Zone No. 2 issued the final demolition order.

As per the order, the construction exceeds the area approved in the sanctioned plan dated December 29, 1988. The unauthorized area comprises 61.15 sq. meters in the eastern side margin, 53.01 sq. meters in the western side margin, and a 27.09 sq. meter tin shed—amounting to a total of 142.41 sq. meters. This entire area, including the space occupied by Moonlight Studio, has been declared illegal and liable for demolition.

NMC has instructed the owner to remove the illegal construction within 15 days of receiving the order and submit a compliance report. If the directive is ignored, NMC will proceed with demolition and recover all expenses from the owner.

Copies of the order have been forwarded to the Municipal Commissioner and Administrator, the District Collector, and other concerned departments for further action. The move signals a tougher stance by NMC against unauthorized commercial use of residential properties in the Dharampeth area.
