Chennai/Bhandara: Mayuri Harishchandra Chaudhari, a 23-year-old IT intern from Bhandara district, Maharashtra, drowned after being swept away by strong waves at Golden Beach (Kanathur) near Chennai on the evening of February 21, 2026, police said.
The incident occurred when a group of interns from an IT services firm went to the beach for an outing. According to officials, Mayuri was taking selfies near the shoreline with her friends when a sudden high wave pulled her and another intern, Jay Narendra Patil from Jalgaon, into the sea.
While Raj Kedari, a student from Pune, was rescued safely, Mayuri’s body was recovered later the same day. Jay Patil remains missing, and search operations are still underway along the coastline with the help of drones, local police teams, and the Coast Guard.
The group reportedly consisted of around 26 interns working at a Cognizant office in Chennai.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is monitoring the situation and is in touch with Tamil Nadu authorities to ensure coordination for the ongoing search and the repatriation of the victim’s body to Maharashtra.
Police have once again urged visitors to avoid entering the sea at beaches along the East Coast Road, where strong and unpredictable waves pose serious risks.
