Nagpur: A shocking incident involving the alleged mishandling of a dead monkey by the Saoner Municipal Council has triggered outrage and raised serious questions over the civic body’s adherence to wildlife handling protocols.
According to information available, a monkey died of electrocution in Saoner around 10 am on Thursday. After the incident was reported to the municipal authorities, the animal’s carcass was allegedly loaded into a garbage collection vehicle, the same vehicle used for transporting municipal waste.
The incident came to light after social activist Hitesh Bansod received information about the alleged transportation of the monkey’s body in the garbage vehicle. He rushed to the spot, stopped the vehicle and ensured that the carcass was removed before it could be taken away.
Bansod immediately informed Forest Department official Vijay Gangawane, following which forest officials reached the spot and took custody of the monkey’s body for further legal and procedural action.
The incident has sparked serious concerns over the treatment of dead wild animals by civic authorities. Environmentalists and citizens have questioned how the carcass of a protected wild animal could allegedly be transported in a municipal garbage vehicle instead of being handled according to prescribed wildlife protocols.
The controversy is no longer just about the death of a monkey. It raises larger questions about whether the Saoner Municipal Council has any standard operating procedure for handling wildlife carcasses. If such guidelines exist, why was a garbage vehicle reportedly used for transporting the animal?
Wildlife activists argue that dead wild animals must be handled with dignity and in accordance with legal procedures, as improper handling can destroy crucial evidence in cases involving electrocution, poisoning or other offences under wildlife laws.
Demanding accountability, social activist Hitesh Bansod has urged the municipal administration to conduct an inquiry into the incident and establish a clear mechanism for the safe, lawful and respectful handling and disposal of wildlife carcasses to ensure that such incidents are not repeated.
