Nagpur: The new House of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation is not just a story of electoral victories and political equations, it is also a revealing window into who holds the city’s real financial muscle. A close look at the affidavits filed by the newly elected corporators shows that Nagpur’s civic power corridors are lined with crores, and the Bharatiya Janata Party clearly dominates the wealth charts.
Towering over all others is BJP corporator Virendra Kukreja, whose declared assets run into a staggering Rs 94.95 crore, making him, by a wide margin, the richest face in the new NMC. His wealth spans more than Rs 71 crore in movable assets and over Rs 23 crore in immovable property, setting him in a league of his own.
Trailing far behind, yet firmly in second place, is Congress corporator Kumudini Gudadhe, who emerges as the wealthiest non-BJP member of the House with assets worth Rs 27.10 crore. Her affidavit reflects a balanced portfolio, almost evenly split between movable and immovable assets — a contrast to many others who are heavily property-driven.
BJP’s Sadhna Barde follows closely with declared assets nearing Rs 35 crore, largely anchored in high-value properties. Another heavyweight, Yogita Telang of the BJP, figures among the top tier with assets exceeding Rs 54 crore, underscoring a pattern seen repeatedly in the affidavits, modest annual income figures paired with vast accumulated wealth.
Moving down the wealth ladder, Sandeep Gawai declares assets worth Rs 10.39 crore, predominantly in immovable property, while Congress corporator Shila Tarale, with assets of over Rs 20 crore, also finds a place among Nagpur’s affluent civic representatives.
The Rs 5-8 crore bracket features a familiar cluster of BJP names, Amol Shamkule (Rs 7.49 crore), Tara Yadav (Rs 7.43 crore), Sanjay Ugale (Rs 5.71 crore) and Narendra Borkar (Rs 5.17 crore). Their affidavits reveal a common pattern of residential properties, land holdings, investments and cash, with real estate forming the backbone of their wealth.
Rounding off the list are former Mayor Maya Iwnate, who has declared assets of Rs 4.06 crore, and NCP’s lone corporator Abha Pande, with Rs 3.68 crore to her name.
Political observers say such financial strength often fuels robust campaigns, higher visibility and sustained organisational backing. Now, with civic authority firmly in their hands, the spotlight shifts from balance sheets to performance. For Nagpur’s voters, the expectation is unambiguous, crores in assets must translate into results on the ground, not just influence inside the House.
