Nagpur: Expressing concern over the growing emotional disconnect among children and young adults in the digital age, RSS Sarsanghchalak Dr. Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday said excessive dependence on mobile phones is replacing family conversations and pushing the younger generation towards loneliness, anxiety and emotional instability.

Addressing a gathering in Nagpur, Bhagwat said parents increasingly pacify crying children by handing them mobile phones, a practice that may offer temporary relief but gradually distances them from meaningful human interaction.

“When a child cries today, instead of talking to him or her, we place a mobile phone in the child’s hands. In a way, we are leaving the child in Google’s care,” he remarked, stressing that no technology can replace the warmth of family communication.

He said the declining culture of conversations within families is depriving children of emotional support and values that were once naturally passed on through daily interactions.

‘Family dialogue is the best remedy’

Bhagwat underlined that restoring communication within families is one of the most effective ways to combat the growing sense of loneliness among children and adolescents. He recalled that earlier generations drew emotional strength from reading books, while grandparents played a vital role in shaping children’s personalities by narrating stories filled with moral lessons and life experiences.

“Books strengthened the mind, and stories narrated by grandparents helped inculcate values. Today, both are disappearing from family life,” he observed.

Referring to recent incidents involving students and youngsters, Bhagwat expressed concern over the increasing inability of many young people to cope with setbacks. He pointed to cases where students allegedly ended their lives after failing Class XII examinations, children left home after being reprimanded by parents, or individuals resorted to extreme measures over comparatively minor disappointments.

According to him, such incidents highlight the urgent need to build emotional resilience from an early age through stronger family support systems and open communication.

Mental health as important as physical health

Bhagwat stressed that mental well-being deserves the same importance as physical health. He said emotional stability directly influences a person’s overall health and recovery from illness. An agitated or disturbed mind, he noted, often manifests in anger, stress and poor decision-making.

“Just as physical illness weakens the body, it also affects the mind. Likewise, a disturbed mind can have serious consequences for overall health,” he said.

While modern psychology has made significant progress in understanding human behaviour, Bhagwat said Indian philosophical traditions have long emphasised not merely analysing the mind but experiencing, disciplining and nurturing it.

He added that caring for one’s mental state is essential for personal growth and balanced living.

Rejects alcohol as a solution

Bhagwat also cautioned against unhealthy coping mechanisms, saying some people wrongly believe alcohol can calm the mind. He asserted that true peace cannot be achieved through intoxication but through self-discipline, emotional balance, meaningful relationships and spiritual development.

The RSS chief also advocated the development of an indigenous framework for psychology rooted in Indian philosophy and cultural traditions. He observed that contemporary psychological studies are largely influenced by Western theories and approaches. While acknowledging their contribution, he said India possesses a rich legacy of understanding the human mind that deserves equal recognition.

Bhagwat called for systematic research to develop an independent Indian school of psychology by integrating India’s traditional knowledge with modern scientific understanding.

He said spirituality and inner peace cannot be fully realised unless the mind is disciplined, integrated and tranquil. A balanced synthesis of Eastern wisdom and Western scientific thought, he added, could provide a more comprehensive understanding of human psychology and contribute to healthier, emotionally stronger societies.
