Nagpur: A 30-year-old man who had been missing since Friday was found dead in the Kanhan River in Bhanegaon shivar under Khaparkheda police station limits on Saturday, sending shockwaves through the area.

The body was spotted floating in the river by local residents, who immediately alerted the police. A team from Khaparkheda police reached the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Mayo Hospital for postmortem.

The deceased was initially unidentified. Police subsequently circulated his photograph on social media in an attempt to establish his identity. The effort led to his identification as Amol Dashrath Chette (30), a resident of Panjra.

According to police, Amol had gone missing on Friday after leaving his house carrying his mobile phone and a bag. He did not return home thereafter. His motorcycle, however, was found at his residence. His family members had been searching for him when they learnt about the recovery of a body from the Kanhan River.

After the body was recovered, establishing the deceased’s identity became a challenge for the police. The photograph circulated on social media was subsequently recognised by hardware traders Lakhan Patel and Nilesh Ghormade, who informed the police.

Police then contacted Amol’s brother and conveyed the information about the recovery of the body.

Amol was reportedly employed with a dealer of Kothari PVC Pipes and had earlier worked with Plasto. He was unmarried and is survived by his mother and two younger brothers. His sudden death has plunged the family into grief.

How did Amol reach the river?

The circumstances that led to Amol’s death remain unclear. Police are investigating whether he died by suicide or was killed and his body subsequently dumped in the river.

For now, Khaparkheda police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR). The body has undergone postmortem and investigators are awaiting the report, which is expected to provide crucial clues about the cause of death.

Police are also trying to reconstruct Amol’s movements after he left home, including where he went, whom he met and under what circumstances he reached the river.

Investigators will examine the postmortem findings along with evidence gathered from the spot and other circumstances before determining the exact cause of death. The case remains under investigation.
