Nagpur: The Crime Branch Unit-4 has arrested a man accused of creating panic by allegedly firing a pistol in the air from a moving car at Hasanbagh Chowk under Nandanvan police station limits. The accused, identified as Roshan Ashok Mohite alias Gotya, was apprehended from Wani and subsequently handed over to Nandanvan police for further investigation.
According to police, the incident took place around 1.30 am on Wednesday when Hasanbagh resident Abid Khan Mohammad Khan was returning home on his two-wheeler. As he was taking a turn near DL Motors beneath the flyover at Hasanbagh Chowk, he allegedly noticed a car approaching from the opposite direction.
Police said a person inside the car allegedly extended his hand through the window and fired a shot into the air with a pistol. The car driver then sped away from the spot.
The sudden gunfire triggered panic in the area, prompting Khan to approach the police. Based on his complaint, Nandanvan police registered a case and launched an investigation.
During the probe, police traced the car allegedly used in the incident to Mohite. Investigators examined CCTV footage from the spot and surrounding areas and began tracking the accused. A team from Crime Branch Unit-4 eventually located and arrested Mohite at Wani.
Dispute suspected to be behind firing
Preliminary police inquiry has revealed that Mohite had allegedly been involved in a dispute with a person identified as Siraj in the Hasanbagh area around two months ago.
According to police, Mohite had reportedly come to Hasanbagh looking for Siraj. When he could not find him, investigators suspect that he resorted to firing in the air allegedly to intimidate people and create a sense of fear in the locality.
Police are now investigating the circumstances that led to the firing and the exact motive behind the incident.
Investigators are also working to recover the pistol allegedly used in the firing and ascertain the role of other persons who may have been accompanying Mohite in the car.
Further investigation is underway.
