Nagpur: In compliance with directions from the Supreme Court, the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has announced a series of statewide public hearings to gather feedback from consumers and stakeholders on the review petition filed by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL). One of these hearings will be held in Nagpur on January 3, 2026.
MERC has invited consumers, industry bodies, and other interested groups to submit their suggestions and objections by 5 pm on December 27, 2025. According to a public notice issued on Friday across multiple newspapers, MSEDCL is required to respond to each objection within three days of receipt, and no later than December 31, 2025, for submissions received within the deadline.
The commission will organise public hearings at six locations across the State:
• Amravati – January 2
• Nagpur – January 3
• Navi Mumbai – January 5
• Nashik – January 6
• Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar – January 7
• Pune – January 8
The issue has gained significance following major developments earlier this year. On March 28, MERC issued a historic Multi-Year Tariff (MYT) order, drastically reducing power tariffs — a move widely welcomed by consumers, trade organisations, and power sector analysts. However, MERC later stayed its own order after MSEDCL filed a review petition.
Subsequently, on June 25, MERC passed a revision order that experts claimed reversed the benefits and substantially increased tariffs. This triggered a wave of writ petitions in the Bombay High Court, filed by consumer groups, power companies, and industry associations, who argued that the revision was issued without stakeholder consultation despite bringing major tariff and policy changes.
The High Court quashed MERC’s review order but kept the ruling in abeyance for four weeks, allowing MERC and MSEDCL to approach the Supreme Court. On November 17, the Supreme Court directed MERC to decide on the review petition after consulting all stakeholders and set a 12-week deadline.
The upcoming hearings are expected to play a crucial role in determining the final tariff structure in Maharashtra.
