Men equally contribute for Infertility related complications, says Dr Laxmi Shrikhande

Renowned Infertility Specialist, Laparoscopic Surgeon & no scar Hysterectomy Specialist Dr.Laxmi Shrikhande has been excelling in her field for the past 20 years.  With the recent spurt in the number of couples having infertility issues in Nagpur, Dr Shrikhande has more young couples dropping at her clinic.

Nagpur Today got to speak with Dr Laxmi Shrikhande at a stretch over the infertility related complications and the alarming trend.

Nagpur Today: What does Infertility basically mean?

Dr.Laxmi Shrikhande : Infertility is basically the inability to conceive a baby, which also refers to the state of a woman who is unable to carry a pregnancy to full term but there are various biological reasons of infertility, including some that medical intervention can treat.

Nagpur Today:  Does Infertility problems occur only in Women?

Dr.Laxmi Shrikhande : No, almost 40 to 50 percent of the issues involved with infertility are occured due to the man, another 40 to 50  percent due to the woman, and 20 percent result from complications with both the partners.

Nagpur Today: What could be the causes of infertility?

Dr.Laxmi Shrikhande : There are many possible causes of infertility but ourModern Lifestyle plays a vital role ininfertility like eating junk food, mental stress, consumption of alcohol from young age, smoking, mobile radiations and many more. Also premarital sex can cause long lasting effects which results in infertility.

Nagpur Today: What are the specific infertility disorders mainly in men and women?

Dr.Laxmi Shrikhande : Polycystic ovary syndrome is one of the common female endocrine disorder .Premature ovarian failures, overactive thyroid gland, and underactive thyroid gland are other disorders in females wherein Vein blockage,Low sperm count, Abnormal semen which responsible for about 75% of all cases of male infertility, No sperm formation and Inborn issues are the disorders in males. Apart from these disorders sexually transmitted diseases like aids and cancer in both the cases.

Nagpur Today: What are the therapies or treatments provided by you?

Dr.Laxmi Shrikhande : We provide therapies like micro surgeries for the blockage of vein near seminal vesicles of males,TESA, testicular sperm aspiration which includes testicular fine needle aspiration (TFNA) and in case of female’s,some treatments like fallopiantube surgery, Laparoscopic surgery, IUI (intrauterine insemination), IVF (in vitro fertilization) and many more.

Nagpur Today: How much fertility treatment costs?

Dr.Laxmi Shrikhande :It all depends on the type of tests and duration of treatment. Basically treatment starts from Rs 1000/-and goes up accordingly, up to lakhs.

Nagpur Today: What is your next project for the awareness on infertility?

Dr.Laxmi Shrikhande : We are organising Master-class Infertility workshop for clinicians and students who are willing to have direct access to National and International experts on Infertility on November 9th and 10th at Hotel Centre Point This is a unique event where masters in the field will deliberately focused on topics like IUI, PCOS and Ovulation Induction.

Dr.Laxmi Shrikhande  is an Infertility Specialist, Laparoscopic Surgeon & no scar Hysterectomy Specialist with vast experience of 20 years. After completing her MBBS, MD (OB/GY) in 1990 from GMC, Nagpur.She worked as Senior Registrar in Breach Candy Hospital, and as Lecturer in Grant Medical College & Sir J. J. Hospital, Mumbai.
She has been awarded with 3 fellowships- Fellow of Indian College of Obstetrician & Gynaecologists, Fellow of Indian College of Medical Ultrasound, and Fellow of Indian College of Maternal & Child Health. Also, she has presented her research work on Polycystic Ovarian Disease, Hysteroscopy, Laparoscopy & one day no Scar Hysterectomy at various National & International Conferences. She has contributed 10 chapters in various text books. She has been recently elected as National Vice president of Federation of Obstetrician & Gynaecologists (FOGSI) for the year 2012.
