Nagpur: Nagpur athlete Manoj Chavan of Laksvedh Foundation produced a gold-medal winning performance in the Under-20 javelin throw at the 40th Maharashtra State Junior Athletics Championship being held at Dervan in Ratnagiri.

Chavan dominated the event on the opening day, sending the javelin 60.35 metres to finish on top of the podium. Nanded’s Dinesha Mohte claimed silver with a throw of 54.23 metres, while Sai Lokhande of Ahmednagar secured bronze with 52.57 metres.

The championship is being conducted on the synthetic track of SVJS, Dervan, under the aegis of the Maharashtra State Athletics Association and Ratnagiri District Athletics Association.

Nagpur also registered a medal in the girls’ javelin event, with Mansi Patankar of Track Star Athletics Club winning bronze. She recorded a throw of 28.65 metres. Satara’s Durva Shewade won gold with 43.62 metres, while Arya Mohite of Sangli took silver with 39.01 metres.

Nagpur athletes also made their presence felt in the track events. Kashish Bhagat qualified for the final of the 400-metre race, while captain Pranay Upase and Pradum Raut advanced in the 1500-metre event. Yash Nikode also booked his place in the 400-metre final.

Chavan trains under NIS coach Ishita Roy, while Patankar is coached by Ravindra Tong and Umesh Naidu.
