Swine flu cases double in Nagpur amid surge in seasonal infections

Nagpur: Swine flu cases are witnessing a significant rise in Nagpur, with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) Health Department reporting 33 new H1N1 cases this month, taking the city’s cumulative tally to 66 cases so far this year.

The sharp increase has raised concern as the city is witnessing a notable rise in swine flu cases after nearly two years. The number of cases recorded between January and July was around 33, which has now doubled following the fresh infections reported this month.

The surge in H1N1 cases comes amid a broader increase in flu-like illnesses being reported at government and private hospitals across the city. Outpatient departments are witnessing a heavy influx of patients complaining of cold, cough, fever, vomiting and other respiratory symptoms.

Health experts have attributed the increase largely to seasonal changes and increased exposure to infections. Nagpur has experienced a marked change in weather in recent days, with rainfall and a drop in temperature following an extended spell of humid and warm conditions.

Crowding during recent festivals and travel, particularly religious trips, have also been cited as possible factors behind the rise in respiratory infections. In several cases, multiple members of the same family have reportedly fallen ill.

Despite the increase, health professionals have advised citizens not to panic, pointing out that most patients with H1N1 infection are recovering within five to seven days with timely treatment and adequate supportive care. Suspected influenza cases may be started on antiviral medication depending on their symptoms and clinical assessment.

Experts have also stressed that the current situation in Nagpur should not be compared with the much larger outbreak being reported in some other cities. While influenza and other viral infections appear to be more prevalent this year than during the corresponding period last year, the cases in Nagpur continue to remain largely sporadic and seasonal.

There is also no indication so far of any unusual change in the behaviour of the virus or the circulating strain. However, elderly people and those with multiple underlying health conditions have been advised to seek medical attention promptly if they develop flu-like symptoms.

Health authorities and medical experts have urged people suffering from cough, cold or other respiratory symptoms to follow basic precautions, including maintaining hand hygiene, avoiding unnecessary close contact and taking care to prevent transmission to family members and colleagues.

With the monsoon and fluctuating temperatures continuing, citizens have been advised to remain alert, particularly those vulnerable to respiratory infections, while avoiding unnecessary panic over the rise in H1N1 cases.
