
Nagpur: A drunken altercation between friends turned fatal in Nagpur’s MIDC area after a 32-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death with stones by his own companions following a heated argument during a liquor party. The brutal murder has sent shockwaves across the locality.
The deceased has been identified as Ankush Kishor Shende (32), a resident of Panchsheel Nagar on Isasani Road. According to police, Ankush was unemployed and allegedly addicted to alcohol for a long time. His troubled personal life had reportedly worsened over the years, with his wife leaving him and returning to her parental home some years ago.
Acting swiftly in the case, MIDC Police arrested one of the accused, Vicky alias Daddoo Sanjay Mohod (28), a resident near Buddha Vihar in Isasani, on Sunday. The second accused, Mukul Rowtel, a resident of MIDC area, who had been absconding after the incident, was arrested on Monday.
Police produced accused Vicky before the court on Monday, following which he was remanded to police custody till May 22. The second accused, Mukul, is scheduled to be produced before the court on Tuesday.
According to police sources, the incident took place between 5 pm and 7.15 pm on May 17 on a kutcha road leading towards a religious place under the MIDC police station limits. Ankush was allegedly consuming liquor with his friends when an argument broke out over a trivial issue. The verbal spat soon escalated into a violent confrontation.
Investigators said that in a fit of rage, the two accused allegedly attacked Ankush with large stones, repeatedly smashing his head and body. He suffered grievous injuries and died on the spot before any help could reach him.
After receiving information about the incident, MIDC Police rushed to the scene, sent the body for postmortem examination and registered a murder case against the accused.
The gruesome killing has created panic in the area. Police are now probing the exact motive behind the murder and examining the sequence of events that led to the deadly assault.
