Nagpur: A chilling case of domestic violence and attempted murder unfolded in the early hours of Thursday in the Beltarodi area, where a 22-year-old man allegedly attacked his wife with a knife over suspicions about her character, leaving her critically injured inside their locked apartment.
The shocking incident came to light around 12.05 am on May 21, when Beltarodi Police’s beat marshals were patrolling the area near Green City-4 at Gotal Pajri.
According to police, an elderly man approached the patrol team in panic and informed them that his son was brutally assaulting his daughter-in-law with a knife inside their flat. Realising the gravity of the situation, police immediately rushed to Flat No. 106, Tulip-02, B-Wing, Green City-4. However, the apartment door was found locked from inside and repeated attempts to open it failed.
Sensing imminent danger to the woman’s life, police personnel forcibly broke open the door and entered the flat.
What they saw inside was horrifying.
Investigators said accused Hrishikesh Surendra Wankhede (22) was allegedly attacking his wife, Ashlesha Hrishikesh Wankhede (24), with a knife. The woman had sustained serious injuries on her neck and throat, indicating a brutal attempt to kill her.
Police immediately overpowered the accused, disarmed him, and took him into custody before further harm could be caused. The injured woman, who was bleeding profusely, was rushed to AIIMS Hospital for emergency treatment, where she remains under medical care.
During preliminary inquiry, police learned that the accused frequently abused and harassed his wife over suspicions regarding her character. Investigators said repeated domestic disputes had allegedly escalated into violence, culminating in the brutal midnight attack.
According to police sources, the accused allegedly attempted to murder his wife during an argument by repeatedly attacking her with a knife targeting vital parts of her body.
Based on the victim’s statement, Beltarodi Police registered a case against the accused under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita along with relevant provisions of the Maharashtra Police Act.
The case has been registered by PSI Narayan Ghodke, and the accused has been formally arrested.
The incident has once again raised serious concerns over rising domestic violence cases driven by suspicion, possessiveness, and unchecked aggression within households.
Police said further investigation is underway to determine whether the victim had previously faced abuse or threats before the attack.
