Nagpur: Lawyers and student organisations staged separate demonstrations in Nagpur on Monday to protest the mass detentions during recent demonstrations in New Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
Several advocates demonstrated near the Nagpur District and Sessions Court in solidarity with lawyers who were allegedly illegally detained during protests in the national capital. The demonstrators raised slogans against the Central government and the Chief Election Commissioner.
Meanwhile, members of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and the All India Students’ Federation (AISF) held a protest at Samvidhan Square, expressing solidarity with students and other protesters in Delhi.
The protesters alleged that students were being assaulted in the national capital and expressed concern over what they described as an increasingly authoritarian atmosphere in the country.
Emphasising democratic rights, the demonstrators said citizens must be allowed to express dissent and participate in peaceful protests. They called for the protection of the rights of stakeholders in the justice system, adherence to the rule of law and preservation of democratic traditions.
Advocate Roshan Bagde, former president of the District Bar Association, said the demonstration was organised to support the protests in Delhi and condemn the action taken against lawyers.
The demonstrations in Nagpur come amid continuing protests in Delhi over the demand for CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.
