Nagpur: Festive celebrations marking the arrival of Lord Ganesha are under way across Nagpur and Maharashtra on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi. A large number of devotees have gathered at the Shri Tekdi Ganpati Temple, Nagpur’s revered deity, since the early hours of today, September 14.
The temple premises have become devotional with chants of “Ganpati Bappa Morya, Mangalmurti Morya,” while long queues of devotees have formed to seek the deity’s darshan.
Located on a hill in the Sitabuldi area, the temple is about one kilometre from Nagpur railway station. Tekdi Ganpati is regarded as one of Vidarbha’s important and revered Ashtavinayak shrines, as well as a self-manifested place of worship. Devotees from across the city and various parts of Vidarbha are arriving here for darshan on Ganesh Chaturthi.

A tradition dating back around 250 years
The history of the Shri Tekdi Ganpati Temple is believed to date back around 250 to 275 years. The shrine gained special significance during the reign of the Bhosale rulers. Devotees believe that the temple houses a vermilion-coloured self-manifested idol of Lord Ganesha, which, according to legend, appeared at the roots of a shami or peepal tree.
Another popular legend says that, during the Bhosale era, the area had a large amount of water, and some devotees and members of the royal family would travel by boat to the temple premises to seek the deity’s darshan.
Devotees believe the deity fulfils wishes
Tekdi Ganpati is held in special reverence by devotees as “the Ganpati who fulfils vows.” Devotees make vows at the deity’s feet for their wishes to be fulfilled and return to the temple for darshan after their wishes come true. The temple therefore sees a steady flow of devotees throughout the year, with numbers rising significantly on Ganesh Chaturthi.
पूजा, worship and religious rituals began at the temple early in the morning for Ganesh Chaturthi. Floral decorations, devotional songs and chants in praise of Bappa have further added to the auspicious atmosphere. In view of the crowd, special attention has been given to darshan arrangements and security at the temple premises.
As Ganeshotsav begins across Nagpur and the state, the large crowd gathering for darshan at Tekdi Ganpati highlights Nagpur’s enduring tradition of devotion to Lord Ganesha.
