Nagpur: The Indian Postal Department has gone hi-tech. Along with postal deliveries, the Department has jumped into the e-commerce ring with elan. Now, consumers will see the postmen delivering the essential goods on the lines of Flipkart and Amazon e-commerce companies. Leveraging its parcel business network, India Post recently launched its e-commerce portal — “India Post Office.”

Currently, companies like Flipkart and Amazon are ruling the roost in e-commerce at a time the Indian post offices have a vast network across the country. There are around 1.55 lakh small and big post offices in the country. The department serves even in hilly and inaccessible terrains since decades.

The traders interested in e-commerce through the portal “India Post Office” will have to mandatorily register with it. Thereafter, the department will collect the ordered goods/parcels from the traders and deliver them to the consumers. Following the footsteps of Flipkart and Amazon that return goods not liked by consumers or damaged, the same service will be included in the postal department’s functioning. All the daily needs and other items will be available on the portal of the postal department on the lines of Flipkart and Amazon e-commerce companies. Initially, the Department of Posts has done only soft launch and the full fledge operations of the service were started in December. The Department of Posts has been focussing on e-commerce sector to increase its revenue receipts. It will provide an e-Market place to sellers especially to rural artisans/self-help groups/ women entrepreneurs/State and Central PSUs/Autonomous Bodies etc. to sell their products to buyers across the country. The buyers can access the products of their choice displayed by sellers on the portal and place online orders by making digital payments.

The postal e-commerce will prove immensely beneficial at such places where the Flipkart and Amazon have no services. The Postal Department has also initiated a move to have an agreement with Flipkart.
