Nagpur: A Personal Assistant (PA) to a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) was arrested and remanded to judicial custody after allegedly driving a car under the influence of alcohol and triggering consecutive road accidents on Dussehra night in Nagpur.
The accused, identified as Ketan Hivanj, was returning to his home in Godhani from a party when his speeding vehicle struck a two-wheeler near Samvidhan Square. The impact threw 28-year-old delivery executive Raheel Shakeel Shaikh off his bike, leaving him with severe head injuries. Shaikh, the sole earning member of his family, is currently in critical condition at a private hospital.
According to authorities, instead of stopping to assist the victim, Hivanj fled the scene at high speed. Shortly after, his vehicle rammed into a pickup van near Kasturchand Park while heading toward the flyover. The second collision brought the vehicle to a halt, enabling police to apprehend him.
Officers from the Sitabuldi Police Station responded to the site and took Hivanj into custody. Police stated that the accused was heavily intoxicated and unable to stand properly. A medical examination at a government hospital subsequently confirmed alcohol content in his blood sample.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the law covering rash and negligent driving, causing hurt by endangering life, failure to render assistance to an injured person, and drunk driving. Hivanj was produced before a local court on Wednesday, which remanded him to judicial custody.
The incident occurred during Dussehra and Dhammachakra Pravartan Din celebrations, a period when city roads witness heavy public movement, raising serious concerns over reckless driving.
