Gen-Z Must Lead the Fight Against Drug Abuse, Says DCP Lohit Mathani

Nagpur: Ahead of the city-wide Stay Real Stay Sober drug awareness campaign, a special guest interaction session was organised on August 15, bringing together campaign organisers, volunteers and team leaders with distinguished guests DCP Lohit Mathani and Mr. Anil Deshpande.

The session began with the introduction and felicitation of the two guests, who subsequently addressed participants on social responsibility, youth leadership and the need for collective action against substance abuse.

Addressing the volunteers, DCP Lohit Mathani reflected on the values associated with India’s freedom movement, describing it as ethical, systematic and respectful. He said that while the country has made significant economic progress, the younger generation must continue to uphold the ideals and principles that have shaped India’s journey.

Speaking about Gen-Z, DCP Mathani highlighted the energy, technological awareness and potential of today’s youth. He said young people have the ability to question existing practices, speak out and work towards positive change. He emphasised that the younger generation carries the responsibility of taking the country forward and helping create a better future.

DCP Mathani also spoke about the growing influence of substance abuse among young people, particularly through social circles and environments such as colleges and universities. He cautioned against the normalisation of drug use and other forms of substance abuse, noting that influential individuals can sometimes become examples that others follow.

He stressed that people struggling with addiction need support, awareness, intervention and rehabilitation rather than judgment. Addressing the impact of addiction on individuals and families, he called for collective efforts to help those affected and counter narratives that portray drugs or alcohol as a means of improving efficiency or social status.

As part of the campaign preparations, DCP Lohit Mathani distributed megaphones, placards and daphlis to square leaders for the awareness activities planned across Nagpur. Volunteer kits were also distributed among volunteers and team leaders.

Mr. Anil Deshpande, in his address, spoke about the importance of human connection and being mentally present in one’s surroundings. He emphasised maintaining strong relationships with parents, siblings, friends and the wider community. He also highlighted the importance of collective responsibility and practical approaches to tackling drug abuse.

Adding a patriotic touch to the Independence Day gathering, Deshpande presented an Indian song, reinforcing the spirit of unity and social responsibility among the participants.

The guest interaction was followed by a briefing on the campaign’s proceedings and responsibilities for August 16. Volunteers and team leaders were given instructions regarding coordination and on-ground awareness activities.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks to DCP Lohit Mathani, Mr. Anil Deshpande, the organisers, team leaders and volunteers for their participation and commitment.

The interaction served as the final preparatory gathering before the Stay Real Stay Sober campaign on August 16, which aims to bring together Nagpur’s youth and citizens to raise awareness about drug abuse and encourage collective action towards a healthier and drug-free city.

The campaign delivered a clear message: awareness must become action, and Nagpur’s youth can be a powerful force in the fight against drug abuse.
