Nagpur: Diwali, the festival of lights and firecrackers, as we call it, is around the corner and the firework dealers are in a perplexity of Environment cess. Notably, the National Green Tribunal has directed for collection of environment cess from all the dealers. After the imposition of this rule, the dealers will have to pay a sum of Rs. 3000 as an extra charge.

However, the rule has brought a new challenge to fire department NMC as the NOCs had already been distributed to most of dealers until the information was received. For the NOC, department has charged Rs. 1000. However, according to the direction by NGT, Rs. 4000 has to be charged for the same.

It has now been directed that before the police verification of NOCs, the applications must be sent back and the extra charges must be availed. In case of the dealers to whom licenses have already been distributed, NMC’s Health Department will be availing the cess by starting a campaign.

The cess is being charged to save the NMC from extra expenses of maintain cleanliness after burning of crackers.
