Nagpur : Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis informed in the Legislative Council that effective measures are being taken in the state to prevent incidents of sexual abuse and violence against women and girls in schools and colleges. The easy availability of obscene videos and pictures among teenagers is indeed an alarming scenario which needs to be countered. Fadnavis was speaking while replying to the issue which was brought to the attention of the House by MLC Uma Khapre. She was referring to a recent incident of sexual assault on a thirteen-year-old girl student in a municipality school in Matunga, Mumbai.
He further said that the Matunga case is alarming and the investigation of the incident is underway. It is very necessary to curb such unfortunate incidents. The state government, home ministry and the police department are making all possible efforts to conduct technical investigation and analysis of cyber offences. Cyber labs have been set up in every police station in the state and the adverse influence of pornography on minors is a grey area on which the police department is working. It is a matter of grave concern that such perverse thinking is becoming increasingly common among children and youths today. When the cyber cell receives information about sexual videos and other related content uploaded somewhere, immediate action is being taken to delete them from social media platforms and the concerned websites. In addition, efforts are underway to prohibit such content and bring down such websites on the Internet.
Fadnavis said that CCTVs have been installed in some of the prominent schools and colleges in the state, but there is a need to install CCTVs in other schools and colleges too. Directives will be issued in this concern soon and such installation will take place in a phased manner. Also a committee of officials from the education and home affairs department will be set up to study the feasibility of cafeteria and other facilities in educational institutions and an independent policy will be arrived at in this regard. Activities like Police Didi are being implemented in the state to educate teenagers, the number of police Didis being deployed for the purpose is being increased and many private NGOs are also participating in this initiative. Fadnavis said that a comprehensive programme will be undertaken in this concern. He also informed that instructions have been given to strictly follow laws, rules and regulations regarding the appointment of drivers in school vehicles. Leader of Opposition Ambadas Danve, Pravin Darekar and Shashikant Shinde also asked questions during this discussion session.
