Nagpur: In good news for Nagpur Municipal Corporation, the Chief Election Commissioner of India has relaxed the model code of conduct for NMC and allowed it to carry out infrastructure works related to the G20 summit scheduled to be held in Nagpur on March 20.

As many as 161 development works worth Rs 190 crore are going on in three Assembly constituencies — West, South-West and South Nagpur. The works are being done only on routes which G20 delegates are expected to use for visiting two hotels on Wardha Road, Futala Lake and Deekshabhoomi. Most of the works will include road strengthening, landscaping, beautification and electrical illumination on these routes.

In December last year, the ECI had announced implementation of the model code of conduct in view of the Teachers’ constituency elections to be held on January 30. This had barred NMC from carrying out works related to the G20 summit. Municipal Commissioner Radhakrishnan B had approached the Nagpur District Election Returning Officer and submitted an application seeking relaxation of the model code of conduct.

Subsequently, NMC’s application was sent to the Chief Election Commissioner of India in New Delhi. Recently, NMC received a letter from ECI relaxing the code of conduct. Now, NMC has started the work at war footing, reports said.
