Nagpur: Sanjay Agrawal had filed a Right to Information (RTI) application with the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways seeking information on e-challans across the country. However, instead of providing the figures directly, the ministry clarified that the information was available with the transport departments of the respective states and Union territories.
Meanwhile, data available on the official e-challan website has revealed the broader picture. Between January 1, 2015, and September 9, 2026, a total of 47.95 crore e-challans were recorded across the country, involving fines worth ₹74,612.88 crore.
Of these, 29.59 crore challans remain pending, involving ₹48,351.48 crore. A total of 18.37 crore challans have been disposed of, with ₹26,261.40 crore collected, according to the website.

In cases referred to the courts, 16.86 crore challans were sent for judicial proceedings. Of these, 2.85 crore cases have been disposed of, while 14.01 crore challans remain pending in the judicial process.
In its response to Sanjay Agrawal’s RTI application, the ministry said that enforcement of the Motor Vehicles Act and the Central Motor Vehicles Rules falls under the jurisdiction of the respective states and Union territories. Therefore, state-wise and year-wise accurate data will have to be sought separately from the concerned transport departments.
