Nagpur: A special drive to remove water hyacinth from Ambazari Lake began on Sunday (February 23) under the city’s Solid Waste Management Department. The initiative aims to curb pollution levels in the historic lake and restore its ecological balance.
The action follows instructions issued earlier by Mayor Nita Thakre, who had inspected Ambazari Lake and directed the municipal administration to remove the water hyacinth on a war footing. She had also instructed officials to stop the inflow of contaminated water entering the lake.
Four Poclain Machines Deployed
Acting on the Mayor’s directives, the Solid Waste Management Department launched the removal operation using four poclain machines to clear the invasive aquatic plant.
Water hyacinth has been contributing significantly to pollution in the lake by blocking sunlight, reducing oxygen levels, and affecting aquatic life. Officials said that if required, the number of machines deployed for the operation would be increased to expedite the process.
Dharampeth Zone Officer Lokesh Basanwar stated that the department is committed to ensuring effective removal of the hyacinth and improving water quality in the lake.
The civic body expects that the sustained removal drive will help reduce pollution and enhance the overall condition of Ambazari Lake, a prominent recreational and ecological landmark in Nagpur.
