Nagpur: Emphasising the enduring relevance of Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy, Nagpur City (District) Congress Committee president and West Nagpur MLA Vikas Thakre warned that straying from the path of truth and non-violence poses a serious threat to the nation’s unity.
Thakre was addressing a gathering on Shaheed Diwas (Hutatma Din) after offering floral tributes at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Variety Square. The programme was jointly organised by the Nagpur City (District) Congress Committee and the World Non-Violence Day Organising Committee.
Speaking on the occasion, Thakre said that the country is witnessing an atmosphere marked by hatred, division and growing intolerance, and stressed that Gandhi’s ideals remain the strongest force capable of holding India together. “India’s foundation rests on inclusiveness, democracy and the Constitution envisioned by Mahatma Gandhi. Any attempt to dilute these values in the quest for power is dangerous for the country,” he said.
He further asserted that the Congress Party would continue its struggle to safeguard constitutional principles, truth, non-violence, equality, fraternity and social justice, and resist any forces undermining democratic values.
On the occasion, Congress leaders, corporators and party workers took a collective pledge to uphold Gandhian ideals and reaffirmed their commitment to protecting democracy, national integrity and the Constitution.
The programme was attended by former Union Minister Vilas Muttemwar, who is also Chairman of the World Non-Violence Day Organising Committee, MLC Abhijit Wanjeri, along with senior Congress leaders, office-bearers and workers.
