Nagpur: The process for electing the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has reached a decisive stage, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) set to finalise its candidates ahead of the nomination deadline on Monday, February 2.
In this backdrop, a crucial BJP meeting is scheduled to be held on Friday at the Nagpur residence of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. Highly placed sources said that key decisions are likely not only on the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor, but also on the chairpersons of the Standing Committee and other subject committees of the civic body.

Selection process gains momentum
According to BJP sources, the party leadership is keen to finalise candidates for all major posts before the nomination process begins, in order to prevent internal confusion and dissent. The official announcement of BJP’s nominees is expected soon after the meeting.
Senior leadership to attend
The meeting is likely to be attended by senior BJP leaders, MLAs, organisational office-bearers and prominent elected representatives from Nagpur. Party insiders said the leadership will carefully weigh factors such as organisational balance, regional representation, experience and future political strategy before taking a final call.
Gadkari’s role crucial
Nagpur is considered a politically significant city for the BJP, and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari’s role in the leadership selection process is expected to be pivotal. Gadkari has earlier played an active role in shaping the party’s municipal election strategy and seat-sharing decisions.
BJP’s clear mandate
The BJP has returned to power in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation with a resounding majority, winning 102 of the total 151 seats. The Congress was reduced to 34 seats, while other parties secured limited representation.
The performance of other parties is as follows:
• AIMIM: 6 seats
• Muslim League: 4 seats
• Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction): 2 seats
• Bahujan Samaj Party: 1 seat
