Nagpur: The Maharashtra Government has entrusted Dr Avinash Gawande, Medical Superintendent of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), with the additional responsibility of Dean of Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH), popularly known as Mayo Hospital, citing administrative requirements.
Dr Gawande, who is a Professor of Preventive and Social Medicine, will discharge the additional duties of IGGMCH Dean alongside his existing responsibilities as Medical Superintendent of GMCH.
His appointment comes in recognition of his administrative experience and contribution to public healthcare. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Dr Gawande played an important role in managing the healthcare crisis and coordinating medical services, contributing significantly to efforts to save lives.
As Medical Superintendent of GMCH, he also focused on streamlining hospital administration and addressing operational difficulties faced by patients and their relatives. His efforts helped improve coordination and management at the hospital at a time when patients were grappling with several difficulties in accessing healthcare services.
The Government’s decision to assign him the additional charge is aimed at ensuring administrative continuity and strengthening the functioning of Mayo Hospital. Dr Gawande will continue to hold his existing post at GMCH while overseeing the administrative responsibilities of IGGMCH.
