Moharram also marks the dark period surrounding the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the prophet’s grandson. Imam Hussain was martyred on the tenth day of Muharram by then Umayyad Caliph Yazid I in the Battle of Karbala in 622 AD. Imam Hussain was martyred along with his 72 companions on the Day of Ashura (10th Moharram). Mostly, the Shiah sect observes Muharram across the world.
