Nagpur: From modest savings to staggering fortunes, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) election arena has turned into a revealing window into the lives of those seeking to run the city. After days of anticipation, the civic body finally uploaded the candidates’ affidavits late on Monday night, allowing voters a closer look at the financial standing, educational background and criminal records of nearly 1,000 aspirants in the fray.

The disclosures present a strikingly wide spectrum. Declared assets among candidates range from as little as Rs 7.8 lakh to an eye-popping Rs 95 crore, while educational qualifications span from Class 5 pass to postgraduate degrees. An analysis of affidavits filed by a few prominent candidates highlights how sharply contrasting profiles coexist in the civic race.

At the top end of the wealth chart is BJP’s Virendra Kukreja, contesting from Ward 1 (D). The businessman, a Class 12 pass, has declared total family assets of Rs 94.94 crore, including Rs 71.08 crore in movable assets and Rs 23.86 crore in immovable property, along with liabilities amounting to Rs 62.29 crore. Notably, his affidavit reflects a dramatic 466% jump in assets since 2017, when he had declared Rs 16.76 crore.

At the other extreme stands Independent candidate Komal Chaudhary from Ward 12 (D), who has declared total family assets of just Rs 7.78 lakh, no liabilities, and an annual income of under Rs 3 lakh. A Class 12 pass housewife, Chaudhary’s profile underscores the stark financial contrasts playing out within the same civic election.

Educational diversity among candidates is no less pronounced. Former Mayor Maya Ivnate, now a BJP nominee from Ward 12 (B), has studied up to Class 5 and declared total family assets worth Rs 4.06 crore, largely in immovable property. In contrast, BJP’s Sandip Gawai, a postgraduate candidate from Ward 35 (A), has declared assets of Rs 10.39 crore, with liabilities of Rs 42.13 lakh.

Women candidates feature prominently across party lines, often listing multiple professional roles. Congress candidate Kumudini Gudadhe from Ward 38 (B), wife of All India Congress Committee Secretary Prafulla Gudadhe Patil, has declared total family assets of Rs 27.10 crore and liabilities of Rs 3.59 crore. An MA graduate, she reported an annual income of Rs 34.08 lakh and described her occupation as a combination of job and business.

Similarly, BJP’s Shivani Dani, a young BSc graduate contesting from Ward 36 (C), has declared assets of Rs 3.22 crore and liabilities of Rs 37.31 lakh. Her affidavit lists salaried employment, business, and management consultancy as her professional background.

The affidavits also bring criminal disclosures into focus. Independent candidate Sunil Agrawal from Ward 14 (D) has declared assets of ₹69.78 lakh and disclosed two criminal cases, among the few such declarations in the affidavits reviewed.

Overall, candidates from BJP, Congress, NCP factions and Independents appear scattered across the wealth and education spectrum, reinforcing one clear takeaway for voters: in Nagpur’s civic elections, neither riches nor degrees follow a uniform political line, making the ballot a true test of public choice beyond numbers on paper.
