Crime Branch intercepts car, seizes Rs 54 lakh in junked currency, 5 men held

Nagpur: Acting on a tip-off, Crime Branch sleuths on Tuesday evening intercepted a Mahindra XUV-500 car and seized over Rs 54 lakh in junked currency notes of Rs 1000 and Rs 500. The car (MH-49/U 7578) was intercepted in front of a shop named Ghar Sansar near Sidheshwar Hall on Tukdoji Square-Manewada Square Road around 6.50 pm leading to recovery of the huge money in demonetized currency.

The Crime Branch sleuths also detained five persons travelling in the car namely Tuslshiram Ganpatrao Barapatre (42) of EWS Quarters, Somwaripeth, Mukund Ajay Mar (32) of New Mangalwari, Pramod Hariram Jharbade (42) of Chandramani Nagar, Sandesh Tarachand Motghare (45) of Ujwal Nagar and Gurudev alias Mahesh Dadaji Mathne (27) of New Narsala. When the cops checked the bags in possession of the five accused, they found 2471 notes of banned Rs 1000 currency valued at Rs 24.71 lakh and 5983 notes of demonetized Rs 500 currency worth Rs 29.91 lakh stacked in the bags. The collective value of seized currency is Rs 54.62 lakh. Since the matter was related to Income-Tax Department, the seized cash was handed over to the concerned authorities.

The action was initiated by Crime Branch Unit 3 PI Vaibhav Jadhav, API Dnyaneshwar Bhedodkar, constables Shatrughna Kadu, Shailesh Thawre, Suresh Hingnekar, Anil Dubey, NPCs Manish Bhonsale, Atul Davande, Shyam Kadu, Driver Sharif under the directives of Commissioner of Police Dr K Venkatesham and guidance of DCP (Detection) Ranjankumar Sharma and ACP (Crime Branch) Nilesh Raut.
