Brain dead man saves 3 lives, gives eyesight to needy with organ donation in Nagpur

Nagpur: A brain dead 30-year-old man saved three lives and gave eyesight to the needy following donation of his two kidneys, liver and a pair of corneas after his death in a road accident.

The life saver, Swapnil Anant Hatwar (30), an employee of WCL and a resident of Dighori, was returning home on March 29 from duty at WCL’s Makardhokda Mines. Midway, a speeding truck hit his bike near Vihirgaon on Umred Road. As a result, he suffered serious head injuries. Swapnil was first admitted to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Later, he was taken to Neuron Hospital in Dhantoli where Dr Chandrshekhar Pakhmode, Neurosurgeon, and his team tried their best to save his life but could not.

Finally a team of doctors including Dr Husain Bhati, Neurosurgeon, Dr Abhishek Wankar, Neurologist, Dr Sanjay Kriplani, Intensivist and Dr Ajay Patekar, Anaesthetist declared him brain dead. Dr Pakhmode himself counselled the family members to donate his organs. Zonal Co-ordinator Veena Wathore explained the importance of organ donation to the family members. Parents Anant and Sandhya Hatwar and sister Akansha agreed to donate Swapnil’s organs. The Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) then swung into action.

Accordingly, the ZTCC shifted the patient to a registered transplant centre at Alexis Hospital, where the organs were harvested, allocated and transplanted. Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee President Dr Vibhawari Dani, Secretary- Dr Sanjay Kolte, Zone Coordinator- Veena Wathore helped for processing organ donation. Liver and one kidney were allocated to Alexis Hospital for a 50- year-old man and 40-year-old man respectively. A 27-year-old woman at Wockhardt hospital was in the waiting list of kidney recipients. She was allotted a second kidney. Pair of corneas was donated to Madhav Netra Pedhi. Liver retrieval and transplant was done at Alexis Hospital where Dr Balchandran Menon- Liver Transplant surgeon, along with his team Dr Rajvilas Narkede and Dr Amit Gulhane, Dr Brijaesh Gupte, Dr Rahul Daga did the needful.

It was the 89th deceased organ donation since the inception of ZTCC and fourth deceased donor of this year. It was the 60th successful liver transplant in Nagpur and the 153rd and 154th kidney transplant in the city.
