‘Bhoomipujan” of the proposed Construction of Via-duct on Reach III between Jhansi Rani Square to Lokmanya Nagar on E-W corridor was performed today on the premises of Institution of Engineers. The ‘Bhoomipujan’ was performed at the hands of Brijesh Dixit, Managing Director – Nagpur Metro Rail Corporation Ltd, in the distinguished presence of Mahesh Kumar, Director (Project), M. Zazou, Project Director, General Consultant, H. O. Thakre, President, Institution of Engineers, Nagpur Centre and R. Ananta Kumar, Executive Vice President (Urban Infrastructure), M/s. Afcons Infrastructure Ltd.

The proposed work of design and construction of the Via-duct in Reach III between Jhansi Rani Square to Lokmanya Nagar, is nearly 10.8km long. The work is awarded to M/s. Afcons Infrastructure Ltd, Mumbai. The company has mobilized machinery and manpower to begin the work immediately. For construction of viaduct NMRCL has adopted innovative approach; the viaduct segment width is reduced to 8.5m as compared to conventional 10.3m so as to adopt train-end evacuation, eliminate side walkways, eliminate RCC cable troughs and eliminate pre-cast parapets. All this will reduce the weight 60t & time/cost of completion of viaduct.

The via-duct will be constructed by adopting segmental girder launching system similar to the via-duct on N-S Corridor. The N-S corridor via-duct was completely located on median. However, the present via-duct of Reach III will be supported by nearly 50 portals which will facilitate the alignment to move either side of the road. In the present work along with via-duct the support system for stations has been integrated to speed up the construction of stations on this route.

The unique feature of the present via-duct is a viewing gallery located between Dharampeth College Station and Subhash Nagar station. As the metro alignment is well above the Ambazari tank; this viewing gallery will offer unobstructed scenic view of the Ambazari Lake. With the commencement of via-duct construction on E-W corridor, NMRCL has achieved yet another milestone in the journey of the project. The via-duct work and station work on this Reach are progressing fast. Along with the present location of Institution of Engineers, the via-duct work will also start at Ambazari and Lokmanya Nagar. Similarly we will be starting work at three stations also.
