Bhat Familicide: Five days after incident, woman succumbs to burn injuries in Nagpur

Nagpur: Around a week after Sangita Bhat (55), who suffered serious burn injuries when her husband Ramraj (58) set her afire in a car, succumbed to the injuries in hospital on Sunday morning, police said. Nandan (25), the son of the Bhat couple, is being treated at the hospital and his condition is reportedly stable, they added.

According to police sources, Sangita had suffered 60 per cent burns while Ramraj was charred to death in the fire that was reported on July 19 near Khapri Punarvasan in Beltarodi area.

Sangita’s statement was not recorded by the police as she was unconscious from July 19. Statement of Nandan (25) was recorded by the police on Sunday in which he claimed that financial crisis was the only reason behind his father’s murder-cum-suicide act.

A relative of Bhat family told the police that Ramraj was under severe financial crisis after his company was shut down in 2014.The family stayed in Goa for three years for the education of Nandan and returned to Nagpur when he became an engineer. Ramraj had sold the entire property in the past few years and a house, too, was mortgaged. Bhat family was living in a rented accommodation in Jaitala area, the relatives said.

It may be mentioned here that on the pretext of going for lunch at Le Meridien Hotel, Ramraj asked Sangita and Nandan to accompany him on July 19.

However, midway near Khapri rehabilitation project, he lit his entire family after sprinkling petrol. While Ramraj charred to death on the same day, Sangita and Nandan were rushed to hospital under critical condition. After battling for six days, Sangita succumbed to her injuries on Sunday.
