Nagpur: State Revenue Minister and Nagpur Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule has directed officials to prepare a comprehensive short-term and long-term roadmap to tackle pollution in Nagpur district, warning that strict action would be initiated against industries, departments and local bodies found responsible for environmental violations.
The directions were issued during a high-level review meeting held at the auditorium of Niyojan Bhavan on Tuesday, where pollution concerns affecting urban and rural areas of the district were discussed extensively.
Among those present at the meeting were Ramtek MP Shamkumar Barve, MLA Charansingh Thakur, Municipal Commissioner Dr Vipin Itankar, District Collector Kumar Ashirwad, Zilla Parishad CEO Vinayak Mahamuni, Sachin Dhole Patil and senior officials of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board.
During the meeting, Bawankule expressed serious concern over increasing complaints related to fly ash pollution from thermal power plants, untreated sewage being discharged into rivers and industrial pollution caused by paper mills and chemical industries.
He specifically referred to pollution in the Nag, Pili, Kanhan and Kolar rivers and said environmental degradation was severely affecting public health and natural resources in several parts of the district.
According to the minister, nearly 42 villages in Nagpur district are currently facing pollution-related problems. He stated that authorities can no longer ignore the issue and emphasized that all concerned departments and agencies must take responsibility for environmental protection.
To address the situation systematically, an action group headed by District Collector Kumar Ashirwad has been constituted. The committee has been tasked with preparing a detailed action plan within the next three months.
Bawankule directed officials from the Nagpur Metropolitan Region Development Authority, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board and local civic bodies to work in coordination with environmental experts, non-government organisations and institutions including National Environmental Engineering Research Institute for scientific planning and implementation.
The minister also stressed the need for public participation in river and stream rejuvenation projects being undertaken in 73 villages across the district. He said community involvement would play a crucial role in restoring polluted water bodies and improving environmental conditions.
Apart from pollution-related issues, Bawankule also reviewed preparations for the upcoming Kharif season and warned banks against delays or negligence in crop loan distribution to farmers. He instructed officials to ensure timely financial assistance reaches farmers without unnecessary hurdles.
