New Delhi: Carrying excess luggage while flying from Air India will burn a hole in your pockets. From today, Air India will charge more if your luggage exceeds the permissible weight limit as the state-owned airline has revised its excess baggage charges.
Air India raised its excess baggage charges to Rs 500 per kg from Rs 400 per kg. The revised charges were notified by the airline in a circular last week. The revised charges are applicable on all flights operated by Air India, except those of its regional arm, Alliance Air.
“It has been decided to revise the excess baggage rate in the domestic sector to Rs 500 per kg per coupon on all travels commencing on or after June 11 from Rs 400 per kg,” the circular stated. 5 per cent GST will also be applied on baggage for economy class travel and 12 per cent for others.
Passengers travelling to or from airports across Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Tripura, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim, besides the Bagdogra airport in West Bengal have been exempted from the GST.
Recently, the Indian Railways decided to impose a six-time penalty for carrying excess luggage. However, the order was later withdrawn.
