Nagpur: A late-night patrol by Saoner Police turned into a wildlife rescue operation after officers spotted an approximately 8-foot-long python struggling to move with a plastic ring lodged around its neck.
The incident took place at around 1 am on August 8, when PSI Swapnil Gedam of Saoner Police Station was on night patrol in the Chhota Puliya area. He noticed a large python slowly crossing the road.

The snake’s unusually slow movement raised suspicion, prompting Gedam to stop his vehicle and inspect it. He soon noticed that a plastic ring was tightly stuck around the python’s neck, apparently causing considerable discomfort.
Realising the seriousness of the situation, Gedam immediately contacted social worker Hitesh Bansod, who arranged for snake rescuer Shubham to reach the spot.
The snake rescuer carefully secured the python and successfully removed the plastic ring from around its neck without causing further injury. During the examination, the python was found to have suffered a minor injury around the neck.
After receiving first aid, the reptile was released safely into its natural habitat.
Bansod said the plastic ring may have been stuck around the python’s neck for several days, potentially making it difficult for the reptile to swallow food. The timely intervention by the police and rescuers may have prevented a serious injury or death, he said.
The alertness of Saoner Police, along with the prompt assistance of Bansod and snake rescuer Shubham, helped save the life of the helpless reptile. The rescue has drawn appreciation from local residents and wildlife enthusiasts.
