21 students brutally beaten in Yawatmal ashramshala, cook booked

Yawatmal/Nagpur: Even as the incident of rape in one of the school hostels in Yawatmal was yet to settle. another brutal behavior Pusad city police have on Thursday booked a cook at the hostel of the government-run English Medium Ashramshala at village Kakad Dathi for brutally beating up 21 students. The complaint was lodged by parents of the students at the school near Pusad town.

Police sources said cook Devidas Limbaji Jumnake had scolded the children over some petty issue. He locked up 21 students in a hostel room and beat them with a leather belt and wooden stick when the kids did not give satisfactory replies to his questioning.

The school has 225 students in Std I to VII, with the hostel housing students hailing from outside. The students beaten up by Jumnake developed swelling and bruises on their legs and hands. When some of them found the pain unbearable, they called their parents.

The parents thronged the hostel and some took their wards to nearby hospitals. The parents also met the headmaster but he failed to take any action against the cook. One of the parents, JS Khandare, then lodged a police complaint against the cook.

Sources said the headmaster had ignored earlier complaints by parents too. Hostel superintendent Arvind Sarode also admitted receiving complaints, and said the cook had been warned of action. Headmaster AG Chavan expressed concern over the incident, and said he would take up the matter with higher authorities and initiate action against the cook.
