Nagpur: Intensifying its crackdown on food operators flouting safety regulations and those storing prohibited or suspicious food products, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has seized 55,996 kg of suspected roasted arecanut (supari) worth around Rs 2.24 crore from a warehouse in Kalamna.

The action was carried out by a special FDA team as part of its ongoing drive against the storage and distribution of food products suspected to be in violation of food safety regulations.

Acting on information, the team conducted a surprise inspection at the warehouse of Gaurish Agro Pvt Ltd in the Kalamna area. During the inspection, officials discovered a massive stock of roasted arecanut.

According to the FDA, the seized stock weighed 55,996 kg and had an estimated market value of Rs 2,23,98,400.

Officials took the entire stock into custody and initiated further investigation into its source, storage and intended distribution. Samples of the seized material are also being collected and sent for necessary laboratory examination.

The FDA is now scrutinising the documents and records related to the stock to determine whether the product meets prescribed food safety standards and whether any violations were committed in its procurement, storage or distribution.

The action is part of the department’s intensified monitoring of establishments dealing in suspicious and restricted food products.

FDA officials said strict action would be taken if the seized material is found to violate provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act and other applicable regulations.

FDA suspends licences of two Nagpur restaurants over serious hygiene lapses

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food licences of two restaurants in Nagpur after inspections revealed serious lapses in cleanliness, food handling and compliance with prescribed food safety standards.

The action was taken during an ongoing inspection drive targeting hotels, restaurants and other food establishments found violating mandatory food safety and hygiene norms.

FDA inspection teams visited Burhanpur Jalebi Centre at Sonali Apartment on Pratap Nagar Ring Road and Step Inn Restaurant at Ashidham, Law College Square, Giripeth.

During the inspections, officials found deficiencies relating to the cleanliness of the premises, handling of food items and implementation of mandatory food safety and hygiene measures.

Taking the violations seriously, the FDA suspended the food licences of both establishments. The respective operators have been directed to take corrective measures and strictly comply with food safety requirements.

Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, hotels and restaurants are required to ensure hygienic preparation and handling of food, provide safe water, maintain clean premises and ensure proper personal hygiene and health standards among food handlers.

FDA officials said establishments failing to comply with these mandatory requirements would face strict action.

The latest action is part of the department’s intensified drive to prevent food safety violations and protect consumers from health risks caused by unhygienic food preparation and handling.
